High-Resolution Performance
Whether you shoot ENG, sports events, live entertainment, or broadcast-style footage, the Canon XF605 is poised to deliver high-resolution video using a compact form and mobile workflow options, including an iPhone app, a LAN port, and built-in dual-band, MIMO Wi-Fi.
UHD 4K CMOS Sensor
- Capture rates of up to UHD 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 include broadcast-friendly 59.94 frame rates
- High-speed capture at 1080p120 for revealing slo-mo shots
- A high sensitivity of up to 2000 lux at f/12 is perfect for dimly lit locations
DIGIC DV 7 Engine
The DIGIC DV 7 engine powers the camcorder’s processing of the 4K, 10-bit 4:2:2 video and selectable color matrix settings, including Canon EOS and other industry-standard matrix choices, as well as supporting Canon Log 3/HLG and PQ color spaces. The processor allows you to take advantage of the dual SD card slots for dual recording, relay recording, and multiple simultaneous recording options of your footage in MP4 or XFAVC.

15x Canon L Zoom
- A 15x optical/30x digital zoom (25.5-382.5mm 35mm equivalent) lets you reach shots near and far, whether in the field or the studio, and the 9-blade iris provides a pleasing natural bokeh
- Separate F/I/Z controls: Three rings provide professional, individual control over focus, iris, and zoom settings
- Image stabilization: Three optical IS choices include standard, dynamic, and powered IS for smoother motion shots
Advanced Autofocus
The XF605 is the first of the ENG-friendly XF family to offer two autofocus features familiar to Canon EOS series users that help keep your image sharp during dynamic shots:
- Eye AF zeroes in on your subject’s eye for crisp eye focus
- EOS iTR AF X (head detection) does a neat trick of remaining focused on your subject even after they turn their head to the side or away from the camera
Frame and Interval Recording
Create captivating time-lapse effects using the XF605’s Frame Recording and Interval Recording modes. Frame Recording captures a set number of frames with each press of the trigger. Interval Recording enables you to choose the number of frames recorded and the interval length between them.
Cinema Color
Match the look of your other Canon cameras using the XF605’s cinema color matrix selections. Use Canon Log3, HLG, and PQ HDR for beautifully detailed images.

USB Video Out
- Thanks to a USB-C video output, you no longer need an HDMI to USB adapter
- Use the USB-C output to take advantage of all the XF605 features while using it as a webcam, boosting the image and audio quality of your streaming output
New Touchscreen
Gain intuitive touchscreen control, including start/stop with the XF605’s Direct Touch Control menu borrowed from the Canon C70 cinema camera.
CTM iPhone App
Canon’s new iPhone CTM (content transfer mobile) app enables a truly mobile news workflow. Use the app to exchange proxy footage, audio, and metadata through your phone connection and a newsroom server and integrate content into assignment planning software.
HDR-Compatible Viewing Options
- View your images simultaneously via the EVF (viewfinder) and fold-out LCD screen, and output via HDMI and SDI
- HDR compatibility enables you to see finely nuanced images, even in darker and brightly lit areas.

4-Channel Audio
A new multifunction shoe on the XF605 enables you to access up to four inputs on the XLR audio unit, perfect for capturing ambient sound plus one to three speakers.
Lightweight, Compact Form
The compact XF605 is about 25% lighter and 10% smaller than the XF705, a difference you’ll appreciate on long shoot days.
Wired Remote Control
Use the LANC-based RC-V100 to control your main camera functions and shading options. Use an NU (RS-422) controller like the RC-IP100 to control the XF605 and other cameras in your network.

Coming from an XF400, this is an enormous upgrade. The buttons are laid out perfectly. I’ve never had this convenience. It is so worth the extra cost.
Network connectivity is important to me, especially since this is my first camera without a wireless remote. Getting browser remote working takes patience. You have to ‘forget’ your regular wi-fi connection every time (that’s Android’s doing). You have 2 passwords, one for camera access point (1 time entry if you use that) and another to access the web interface, each time. There are separate network and connection settings to configure. If you are patient, this actually becomes easy and completely reliable. Took me 90 stressful minutes to crack the code.
Every focus feature Canon has is packed into this and they all work very smoothly. AF-Boosted MF is a dream.
The camera is quite a bit larger than an XF400 but strangely light-weight, which is really good!
The huge hood has excellent benefits. You can leave huge filters and diopters (500D) attached with the hood in place. Its also effortless to attach and remove. Never thought I’d be so happy to have a labeled lens barrier switch.
Shutter angle is new to me and is now the default. Set it and forget it! Also my first manual aperture ring, which I now totally get.
I shouldn’t leave out the very first thing that jumped out at me. The rocker arm rocks!!! It takes no effort or concentration at all to perform smooth slow zooms. What a quality mechanism!
I use it with a Ninja Inferno, which it pairs well with. The 605 includes most of the assistance function of the recorder so it is great get to pick which works best.
There’s tons more, but long story short, it is everything I was hoping it would be. No more drooling over the unaffordable XF705 🙂

Great autofocus and 4:2:0 options for easy editing. My old 523PRO Lanc handle works great. Lens seems a little downsized from the xf305 with lesser aperture range, smaller filter size, but same optical zoom and good sharpness. LCD has touch control which is a useful alternative to menus. Like scopes for setting exposure but can’t seem to magnify it. Metadata seems a little light but maybe a firmware update add to it. Otherwise, I’d need to give it a 6.

I use this camcorder to film high school sports, primarily football and basketball. For the past 4 years I’ve been using another brand of pro 4k camcorder with a 1/2.3 MOS sensor. So far, filming in U.S. high school gyms this XF605 provides much improved color and much less low-light noise than the prior vidcam. I’m using the general autofocus setting for basketball (not just face or eye detection modes) and it’s doing a wonderful job of keeping the main players and ball action in focus without hunting or choosing background over the foreground action. In gyms the auto WB hasn’t done a good job, but when I create a custom WB with a grey card in each gym (which is very simple and easy to do with the XF605) the results are superb, even with a gym’s poor and inconsistent color-cast lighting. I’ve manually set my shutter and let the camera handle gain, iris & exposure and it’s done a great job (my previous camcorder wouldn’t allow partial manual settings – it was all manual or all auto). I’m using V60 SDXC II cards to record 4k 60p 10 bit 170 mbps mp4 files and they keep up with the recording rate and are 3 times faster downloading than the SDXC I V30 cards used in my prior vidcam. So far I’m 100% satisfied that I updated and upgraded to the XF605, and anticipate that I should get many years of quality, no-fuss results from it.

Coming from recording with a DSLR and a 70-200 lens primarily, this camera made the job a whole lot easier. I received it literally hours before a track meet. Charged the battery to full capacity and was off to the meet paired with a Sachtler Ace M (review below) Excellent combo with room to grow on the Ace M. Crazy narrow depth of field, all the buttons on the side in addition to an easy to use menu system. You can set darn near everything and easily. Battery that comes with it only lasts 1.5 to 2 hours, so you’ll probably want a second battery. Lens hood has open close blinds to protect lens when not in use. Has pretty good low light results. Great for sports, so probably the same for anything else since sports is fast paced. See my Sachtler Ace M two stage mid-level spreader review

The lack of 24p isn’t great. There also seems to be a weird hunting anomaly that happens when Powered IS is turned on and you’re at the longer reaches of the zoom. In contact with Canon about this issue. As it appears to be a common issue. That’s where the cons stop.
This camcorder is incredible value for money. Loads of zoom. Great AF. Lightweight body. CLog3. Wide DR. And the fantastic 422 10 Bit internal.
Hands down best camcorder I’ve ever owned.

I use a C200 cinema camera for all my interviews and locked off shots. however, from time to time, especially outdoor events, highly uncontrolled shoots… near shots, far shots, lots of moving, it is great to have an ENG camera again. 15X optical zoom! Very smooth rocker switch. 4K footage with pretty incredible auto focus, touch screen, etc. A great tool to have. built in ND… lots of features.

I’ve been looking for a good, old fashioned, run-and-gun camcorder for my organization. 4k with decent low light capabilities. This camera is fantastic. You barely need to do anything other than turn it on and point, and you are going to get good, usable video just about every time. DSLR’s are the bomb, but in a lot of cases you just need something with a super fast workflow, XLR inputs, no interchangeable lenses to slow you down, and good low light capabilities. This it the way to go. No issues or problems so far.

I thought about getting the Canon XA70 as it was cheaper and would get the job done well enough.
However, I researched the XF605 and decided that it was a much better camera, look at the specs.
The XF605 is the one to get.

This thing does everything I need it to do, and then some. I was trying to choose between this camera and the XA series for a long time and ultimately went with this because of all of the features and the manual buttons. I didn’t want to be navigating a little LCD screen for every setting I needed to change when I could have it one button away. This things build quality feels so legit too, I love this camera. Zero complaints whatsoever.

This camera is a beast. Produces amazing footage in extreme light conditions. I see myself getting another within a year. May be Canon can consider adding live streaming ability in the next update like their counterpart Sony.

I was a Sony user for many years. I’m glad I switched. Great image quality. I have only shot one event with it so far (indoors-well lit). I used a 2 channel Picomic system with the 3.5 mm mic input, a shotgun on XLR1 and an Audio Technica Lav system on XLR2. It seems as if you can only monitor 2 audio channels with headphones (although I could be wrong). You can, however, see the all 4 audio levels on the display at the touch of a button. I love the smooth and responsive zoom. My old Varizoom VZ-Rock zoom controller works flawlessly. Whether using the LANC interface, the zoom rockers or the lens ring, I get great results. I have one nagging question-why is the word PUSH on the XLR release tabs written upside down? Also, why no printed manual? You get a simple printed guide but there is a comprehensive downloadable one on the Canon website.
