If you love music in it best audio quality and sometimes you really need to hear a good CD while you are working at the office, but you are far away from your HiFi system, AUDIOENGINE D1 (or D2) is for you. Paired with any good headphones, you can transform your notebook or any computer into a HiFi CD player, bypassing the usually poor quality sound cards that come embedded in the computers. Just plug, play and enjoy!! That was a great advice that I got from the folks at in my last visit to the NYC store. Best Regards, Alfredo Novoa Santiago CHILE South America

I am by no means an audiophile but have always enjoyed music. Some how during the digital translation I lost the proper listening equipment. Once I ripped all of my CDs into flac the stereo and CD player got put away. It took me a few years to discover why I wasn’t enjoying my music listening experience anymore. I was listening via poor sounds cards, crummy PC speakers and mp3s on iPods. The Audioengine D1 has freed my digital music collection and taken it to the next level. Recommend this device if you are trying to get higher quality audio from your PC. Be sure to also check out Audio engine’s speakers.

I was listening to music a lot at my computer as I worked. Bought this after a bit of research and it has transformed the music I have been listening to for the past months – I can hear instruments and sections of music previously missed, and all through the same headphones and the same music player and files as before. Stunning! I’ll never go back to basic motherboard audio output again.

I have used Audioengine’s 5Plus powered speakers for several years and have been impressed except for distortion.. They had been paired with an unnamed product consisting of three Jack Ryan novel sized units, with wires everywhere and an IMac. Unfortunately, I experienced considerable distortion. The D1 replaced all three and the sound is crystal clear. No discernible distortion. I couldn’t ask for more. The only thing that some users might find negative is that the system bypasses all equalization and volume controls on the computer. This is not a problem for me, but if other listeners want a boom box, they will have to provide it after the D1.A big plus is the support Audioengine provides its customers. I emailed them twice with questions regarding the use of the product. In both cases, I received a response immediately. All manufacturers should have the quality of product and customer support they do.

I listen to music all the time, music is literally my life and I’m always looking for ways to get the best sound possible. I did a lot of research and found this to be the best DAC (digital audio converter) for the money at my price point. This little guy is seriously so easy to use. You literally just plug it VIA USB and you’re done. No drivers no hassle. The best part about the whole set up is that you don’t need to have it plugged in to an outlet since the D1 is powered by the USB cable. This DAC produces much cleaner sound than my on board audio card and I’m so happy I bought it. If you have a decent pair of head phones or a set of nice speakers I would say this is a must have. It might be a little over kill if all you use is iPod head phones. But with decent equipment plugged into the D1 you will experience some amazing audio, and I believe you will be one happy camper.

First, let me start by stating that I am not a habitual audiophile, nor have I comparison reviewed countless products. Just a guy with an appreciation for music, a moderate budget, and enough desk-time to make a decent setup worth the investment. For reference, I am currently using this product in combination with the Master & Dynamic MH40 Over-Ear Monitors and TIDAL’s HIFI digital streaming service. In sequence, this product was the third of three items that comprise my setup (monitors, streaming product, dac – in that order). After purchasing good headphones and upgrading to better source material, the final piece was to eliminate the onboard sound processing on my MacBook Pro. When combined with other high fidelity products, this DAC made a noticeable different in the overall quality and listening experience. The sound is more warm/full and the notes more sharp/precise. I went with this particular DAC over some of the other similar (portable) units because of it’s no-frills, all value feature set. USB powered, physical volume, and the ability to power headphones or desktop monitors. No on board EQ, gain, display, or anything else that may distract you from the core purpose of this product (to decode digital audio). I also went with this unit because other folks who are qualified to compare this product with others of similar likeness gave it high ratings for its audio dac performance. Super happy with it. Would buy it again / recommend to friends.

Adding this to my DAW has made a huge difference. If you need a simple, easy way to improve your playback from any computer, there is no need to spend big bucks. This device fills that need. I finally can listen to my tracks as they were recorded. No added colour, no noise, just clean powerful sound. I’m using 250-ohm reference quality headphones, and I get plenty of volume.

First of all, I’m no audio expert. IMHO this is one of the best portable dac/amp combo. Sound wise, this little thing produces clean, clear and crisp audio. Some people may contradict me to what i am going to say, but it drives my Senn HD650’s to enjoyable levels of listening. Again, this is subjective, as I listen in moderate volumes. No regrets in purchasing this.

If you are an audiophile or musician, you can’t do any better than this for the price. I bought 2 of these to solve a big problem and now I’m going to buy more. FYI, I’m one of the most experienced audio guys in the world specializing in radio, television and professional motion picture sound systems. Exceptional because it works right of the box! To Audio Engine, keep up the great work.

Using the D1 with my HP 15 Notebook PC it greatly improved the entire bandwidth, with cleaner, sharper midst and highs, and a tighter, fuller bottom end. I use it primarily with a pair of AKG K702 cans, which the D1 drives much better than the HP’s headphone amp. Great at the price!

My original D1 unit is still working some eight years after buying it. I recently added another to my collection. Depending on the quality of your computers DAC–and your ears–this unit will make anything between a slight to a major improvement in the sound of music recordings being reproduced from your computer

Before getting this unit, I ran my four amplified audio speakers from the headphone jack on my iMac. Using audio for editing in Final Cut Pro, but also watching movies at night, I had a nest of splitters separating the stereo lines to the various speakers and also to my headphones. A friend suggested the quality would be better with a digital audio converter, so I purchased this one. I am thrilled with it. I ran all the wires under my editing table and the master volume knob is right there at the front of my desk where I can adjust it when the volume gets too loud (Bruce Willis movies, etc.) And the headphone jack is right where I need it, cutting out the amplified speakers just by plugging it in. It’s the most useful addition to my computer in a long time.
