The J33 from Radial is designed specifically for use with turntables and is a combination RIAA turntable preamp and active direct box. This allows vinyl albums (LP’s) to be connected directly to a microphone preamp in a mixing console. The unit is ideally suited for archiving, sampling, scratch performances and DJ mixing when the highest possible sound quality is required.
The J33 is designed for use with magnetic cartridges only (the box does not support active cartridges) and the choice of outputs makes the unit very flexible. It can feed a hi-Z input such as a DJ system, and a low-Z input such as a pro-mixing console at the same time. It can be used solely as an RIAA preamp with hi-fi equipment or as an RIAA preamp and direct box combination.
The J33 may be powered with 48V phantom when used with a mixing console, or with the included power supply when phantom is not available. Housed in a heavy-duty enclosure that makes it impossible to torque the PC board, the outer shell of the J33 features a book-end design that protects the connectors and switches.

I have purchased several turntable pre-amps, and they lasted a short while. This one is substantial and audio reference. I expect it to last a long, long time. Excellent sound reproduction.

After many hours of reading reviews of Turntable preamps, I decided on the J33 for several reasons. 1) Radial has an outstanding reputation with live sound and recording engineers. 2) One of the only units with XLR (Balanced) outputs. I’m using this with a Linn Sondek LP12 Turntable. Connected the L/R RCA outputs of the J33 into a Harmon Kardon amplifier for listening through Klipsch Forte speakers. The L/R XLR outputs into Presonus AI24 Mixer. The Presonus is connected to a Mac running Pro Tools. Main purpose of this is to allow conversion of vinyl (not available commercially in digital format) to digital format with Pro Tools in my recording studio. The meters in Pro Tools show almost -inf noise floor with the J33. That is very impressive. There literally is no audible hum from the J33 or the Linn. The J33 is also built like a tank. Very happy with my choice and would highly recommend this device for anyone wanting to add a preamp to their turntable.
