Nathanael –
I purchased a pair of these for talking head video work along with the 5′ (150cm) Octabox and a 2’x2′ softbox. I was not sure if the F160 would fill the Octabox well, but in an otherwise unlit room, I’m getting great exposures at f2.8, 1/50th, ISO 800 with power set at 7.8 (it goes from 6 to 10). So, if I wanted more DoF, I could get two more stops out of this relatively large modifier. Obviously if it can fill the big Octabox, smaller modifiers or reflectors are no problem.
The lights have excellent color definition, and it is easy to match them to ambient if desired since they vary continuously. It is also possible to adjust the green/magenta balance, which is nice if you need it.
These lights advertise that they can be controlled remotely over WiFi. I’m sure that they can, but the app doesn’t support them at this time. It is coming soon. I’ve asked in email, but not heard back on a timeframe. So, I’m standing on a chair to change the parameters when it is on top of the Octabox, boomed out several feet. I am looking forward to whenever the wireless app is altered to support the F160.
The F160s do have fan. At full power, it runs continuously. At minimum power it doesn’t run at all. Starting at power level 7.0 or so, it will cycle on and off, getting more frequent as the power climbs. I primarily shoot video, and it almost always has dialog. The fan is not subtle. This may or may not be a problem depending on how close the light is, how high the fan is, the pattern of your mic pickup, etc. Using a supercardiod mic placed between the Octabox and talent, with the null pointing right at the F160, I did not hear it in the take. But these are NOT silent lights like LED panels or KinoFlo flourescent fixtures.
But the light quality is wonderful. The Broncolor modifiers are very well made. Overall I am pleased with the system and will add another F160 in the future.
